One of the greatest challenges of sewing is learning how to make a pillow from a shirt. The difficulty lies in knowing how much fabric to use, the correct stitching techniques, as well as knowing how to cut the right shapes. When making a pillow from a shirt you need to know what sort of cut to make, as this will determine how your pillow will look once completed. You have to make three important cuts on the back of the shirt. You can also use the neck hole to punch a line for stitching or you can just leave it empty. I will discuss the three cuts and methods in this article.
The first cut is made on the back pocket of the shirt. This is the most difficult cut, as there is no way to tell if the shirt’s pocketing will line up with the stitching or not. When making a pillow from a shirt that has been stitched, you will not be able to see the stitching clearly. If however you can see the stitching then you can make the cut with more accuracy.
If you are making a soft baby blanket, then you just need to cut along one edge of the pocket on the bottom of the shirt. It will appear as if there is a pocket at the bottom of the shirt, but it will not. You should therefore just follow the crease of the pocket. Sew the pocket according to the direction of the crease. As I mentioned before, it is very difficult to tell if the pocket will line up correctly with the stitching, so make sure that you double check!
The second cut involves the inside of the shirt. To do this, you just have to remove the pocket from the back pocket of the shirt. Now take a marker and write the position of where you want to place the stitching. You will have to work quickly, as these little pocket spaces can sometimes be tricky to describe on a very tiny piece of paper!
Sew the pockethole inside the shirt. It might seem odd, but you would be surprised how quickly the pocket holes open. Put the needle behind the pocket and insert it into the pocket. Draw the needle out of the pocket hole and out of the shirt. You can then thread the thread through the rest of the pocket stitches. Remember that it is a good idea to start stitching along the outside of the pocket, so that you do not have any sewing lines showing through the fabric of the garment!
Finally you will have completed the first part of the task. The second part involves the actual stitching. Start stitching along the crease of the pocket. You should have about a centimetre of extra material around the inside of the pocket. This will allow you to complete the stitching around the same time, which means that you can work in small sections.
As you stitch, you will notice that the pocket starts to form. Do not worry if there are some stray bits of material as this will be pushed back into the pocket hole when the last stitch is completed. Once the pocket hole is complete, put the shirt on and sit with it upright. The pocket will be completely visible through the pocket hole.
