There are four basic parts to refrigerators, which are the compressor, condenser, evaporator, and expansion tank. The compressor is located under the refrigerator and performs the important task of heating and cooling the inside of the refrigerator. The coils in the condenser are what convert the liquid into gas form for use as ice and make it circulate throughout the entire unit. The evaporator cools off the gas created by the compressor and releases it as cold air. And the last component is the expansion tank, which holds the chilled water.

All of these components are located within the refrigerator and are critical to the operation of the machine. When one of these parts is not working properly, then the whole refrigerator stops working. There are several things that could be the problem, but sometimes simple troubleshooting can fix the problem. In most cases, GE ice makers will have information available on the Web about their refrigerators and other products.

One of the more common GE profile refrigerator ice maker problems is caused by an air leak in the condenser. This can be very inexpensive to repair and you will probably find a simple solution. Some of the more expensive products will have special repairmen, so you should check before you call them if you cannot seem to find the answer to your problem quickly. You may have to remove the air filter to be able to access the condensers.

The second most common problem with this model of refrigerator ice maker is an issue with the evaporator. Sometimes this part will freeze and not be able to release the water that is produced from the ice. When this happens, there is not enough room for all of the water that is released to freeze, so the ice does not come out. This can cause it to drain and you will have to start the cycle all over again.

The third most common problem with GE refrigerator ice makers is the freezer burn up. It is usually caused by someone trying to put too much ice in the freezer, but the water condenses inside the freezer and makes it difficult to get the ice out. It also can be caused by incorrectly placing the food in the freezer. Always place all of your food in the freezer on low or at a lower temperature than the manufacturer recommends. If you find this happening, try lowering the temperature inside of the freezer a few degrees and running the freezer for a few minutes to circulate the air better.

Another problem that has been noted with the GE ice maker is the water that freezes in the pipes. You need to make sure that you do not run very hot water through the pipes on the fridge and that you do not turn on the ice maker when the water is extremely hot. If this happens, the pipes could burst, causing a dangerous gush of cold water in your house. It is best to wait until the water is a little cooler before turning the machine on.

One final common problem reported with the GE refrigerator ice maker is that the blades will break off. This seems to be a problem with some of the more older model of refrigerators, but the newer ones will also have problems. It is a very good idea to change the blades as soon as they start to break down. When this happens, you are left with a problem solving ice that tastes bad, leaking condensation on the inside of the freezer, and lots of clean up to do.
